Many people say you can – and should –spot clean your Persian or Oriental rug yourself, so long as you do so carefully. You never want to fully wet your rug at home.
A wet rug is very hard to move and dry and clean at home- that is only one reason why we truly don’t recommend that anyone clean their rug themselves.
Why? DIY-ers do not have the set up to fully wash dirt out and cleaning solutions out of the rug and they are at a much higher risk of damaging the rug.
Cleaning a rug properly also can take 7-10 days!
- Instead, we highly recommend that you take your rug to a professional Oriental or Persian cleaner every five to seven years. If a rug is located in a high-traffic area of your home (such as the hall between the front door and the kitchen, the upstairs hallway, in the family room, or kitchen, etc.), you may want to up the frequency of cleaning to every one to three years.
- In fact, if your rug is considered to be an antique rug (at least 80 years), we pretty much insist that you take the rug to a professional for cleaning and appraising.
Doing-it-yourself is fine for some projects, but when it comes to cleaning your fine Persian or Oriental rug, we recommend you take the rug to a professional rug cleaner.
Especially so if the rug is an antique.
- A professional cleaner will hand wash your rug in cold water using a special shampoo made for wool rugs even better organic shampoo and conditioner made for wool rugs. The rug is then scrubbed front and back by hand with a large broom. After this process, it is important to rinse and dry the rug correctly to protect against color run.
- Once the rug has been rinsed several times in order to ensure all soap residue is removed, the cleaners lay the rug flat to dry, we never hang rugs due to color run. As mentioned above, drying can take several days (sometimes a bit less, as long as the weather is dry and warm.
Need another reason to take your rug to a professional? It can be very difficult to get pet odors out of a rug, particularly if you’ve allowed the odor to remain in the rug for several days, weeks, or even months.
If your pet has enjoyed your rug more than you let us hand wash your rug with organic shampoo, conditioner, and our special live bacteria enzyme to stabilize pet accidents, vomit, and other cleaners that were used to try and clean your rug. We only use natural products if this wash does not improve the rug significantly we will rewash it using white vinegar to lift more out of your rug before drying in the fresh air and sun.
